Deep Thoughts: Eyeballs, Smurfs, and Football

(Disclaimer: This is pretty much a stream of thoughts I just wanted to jot down. However, I do stand by my work, and do encourage you to read without any sort of hesitation. Enjoy.)
In the world of College Football, there's a strong divide between two factions: the schools that belong to the superior Bowl Championship Series conferences, and the schools that belong to the mid-major conferences. Independents, pick a side.
Our beloved BCS system was created to help weed out the teams that played against weak schedules, prevent split national champions and to try and prevent human error. However, it leads us to question just how this really determines who the best team is.
There will never be a perfect system. You can look back at many seasons and say that the best team did not win the national title because they either lost along the way, or didn't receive the recognition necessary to be ranked atop the polls. So it really comes down to the 'eye test'. We all like to say we know who the best team is just from watching the teams play. So, if someone was to say that a team from a mid-major conference was the best team, they should be given a chance to play for a national title, right?
